It almost always starts the same way: a member who has been around for months suddenly posts the same text in five channels. "Free Nitro", a supposed Steam gift, a crypto giveaway or "I reported you by accident, message this support account". Shortly after, other members get the same message by DM. It is rarely the member themselves, but someone who has taken over their account, often through a fake login page, a QR code or a stolen session. It pays to know how these scams and phishing links work.
For you as a mod, this means acting fast without permanently throwing out a real person. In this guide you go step by step through what matters in the first minutes, how to remove the spam across all channels, how to help the affected person get back and how to set up your server so the next case does little damage.
How to spot a hacked account
Not all spam comes from a hijacked account. These signs point to one:
- Unusual tone: someone who normally writes in your server's language suddenly posts advertising in another language.
- Same text in many channels within a few seconds, often with a link or an image.
- Typical bait: free Nitro, Steam or game gifts, crypto, "test my game", fake Discord staff.
- DM reports: members tell you they are getting private messages with links from that person.
- Changed profile: a new name, a new avatar or a bio with a link.
A fresh account with no history is more likely a spam bot. Handle it as described in the guide raid protection. With a long-standing member, assume a hack.
Timeout, quarantine or ban: the decision
| Situation | Best response | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Regular member is spamming | Timeout | stops it instantly, roles and membership stay |
| Member with many roles or access to internal channels | Quarantine | removes all roles below Lizbot's own role, can be undone |
| Spam in a lot of channels, cleaning up by hand takes too long | Softban | deletes their messages from the last 7 days, the person can rejoin |
FAQ
Can I recover a hacked account for the member?
No. Only Discord can do that. The person has to reset their password or, if they can no longer log in, open a ticket with Discord support. Your team can only limit the damage on the server.
Why a timeout instead of a kick?
With a kick, the person loses all roles and needs a new invite, which the attacker should not get. A timeout stops the spam just as quickly and can be lifted with one command.
Does purge delete messages in all channels?
No, /channel purge works in the current channel and searches the last 100 messages there. For many channels at once, use a softban or turn on deleting earlier spam messages in AutoMod.
